BRIDGING THE GAP: PROVIDING ADDITIONAL SUPPORT TO CHILDREN WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES

Share the Warmth’s Tutoring program was developed in 2010 in response to the high dropout rate in Point Saint-Charles (one of the highest in the province). Our tutors have noticed an upsurge of learning disabilities in children from our program in recent years. A recent study affirms that over 30% of children attending kindergarten in Southwest Montreal had a learning disability that affected their academic progress. In 2021, the specialized tutoring program was born as a direct response to the community’s needs.

After consulting school administration, educational experts, and teachers, the program was designed specifically for children living with learning disabilities. In recognizing that early intervention contributes to better results, the pilot project is currently running in three elementary schools in Pointe-Saint-Charles and offered to all grade levels.

The main objectives of the program are:

  • Provide adapted programming accessible to children with learning disabilities
  • Improve academic performance
  • Reduce students’ isolation
  • Foster a greater sense of self-worth and social belonging in students
